Review: The Infernal Devices: Clockwork Prince

Review:

Cassandra Clare does it again folks! Action, drama, and love like never before in Clockwork Prince, Clare had me scream and laughing and excited through the whole thing. Mostly thrilled actually. There were so many scenes where the buildup to the climax was so tense, I was trying not to scream or skip forward to see what happens. And I will admitt, I did skip ahead just to sneak a peak, and I found a page where I felt so sorry for Will and fell in love with him that I nearly cried. Sorry Jem, but I'm Team Will. You'll see what I'm talking about in the Quotes.

Plot: So the Magister, Mortmain, is still out on the lose, and Benedict Lightwood has challenged Charlotte for control over the London Institue. Charlotte has two weeks to find Mortmain so she can keep control of the Institue. And while she does this, both of Mr. Dickhead's sons, Gideon and Gabriel, are to train both Tessa and Sophie, for they both are the only ones of the London Institue's staff/permanent guest that aren't trained to defend themselves. With all of this going on, there's a spy or two, parabatai issues, and a love triangle that makes you want to strangle Will and marry Jem. *Sigh.

A lot went on in this book, you can see, but unlike some of her Mortal Instruments books, it's not so overwhelming, it just keeps it going and suspenseful. There were points that I thought were kinda stupid until later on that they made a contribution somehow.

And now for the spy thing. And if you read the beginning paragraph, about Mr. Dickhead's sons being at the Institue, then you guessed right, they are spies, except for surprisingly Gideon. In the book, Gideon turned around to surprise you and rebel against his father, for he's found out the truth about what has happened to his father and why his mother killed herself. Plus what his father is actually dealing in. (Note: he's dealing with Mortmain) This was a subplot, of course, but one that helped Charlotte win the Institue, even if it was cheating/blackmail. Gideon has to be on the more likeable characters in the Infernal Devices. Gabriel, because of what happened between Will and his sister and Will breaking his arm, he's okay, but a pain. But I also thought Will was an ass for doing that to their sister.

Now, the real spy. In the beginning, I had my suspicions, and turns out I was right. Smart, but stupid spy. And though if this spy was right of mind, they probably wouldn't have done it, but because this spy was blinded by their own selfishness and Mortmain's evilness, they were sucked into his evil plot and currently rioting in the Silent City. Personally, I thought this spy was stupid, but the way Clare hinted who it was before we actually found out who it was was through Sophie and Tessa, mostly Sophie, since she was in and out of this spy's room everyday. And I kinda hope Sophie goes through the Ascension. She has the strength and the courage and the kickass-ness of a Shadowhunter. Plus, what she did to the spy was hilarious.

Characters: Of course, we have all of the main characters who havent' really changed, just gotten more braver and more sure of themselves as they try to fight off evil. But it's Charlotte and Henry and Sophie the really changed. Sophie, if you read in the last paragraph, has grown to be a risk taker, learning things she shouldn't, doing things she shouldn't, and not being the terrified little servant girl from the first book. Charlotte and Henry you all know dont' have the best relationship. Mosth thought Charlotte married Henry to have control over the Institue, and others thought Henry married her only because he was paid to because her father believed no one would marry her because of head-strong attitude. But no. There were a lot of rough patches between these two, sometimes I believe more than Tessa, Will, and Jem because they were actually married and Henry does nothing to help run the Institue but try to create inventions he believes will work. But later, Clare changes it around to where their relationship changes them as people and finally to start talking more. They changed more than anyone.

Now, why not Tessa or Will or Jem? Well, Clary and Tessa are alike, both are loyal to those who they love and are head-strong and determined to help. And both don't take crap from Will/Jace. Nothing changes about Tessa. And Will is just Will, except he's desparate to get rid of something he believes he has, and this little subplot had me rooting for him the entire way, even if all his work backfires in his face. Jem, well, Jem becomes more stronger, more sure of himself. At one point though, I thought he was going to kill himself because he believes he has nothing to live for becaues he's dying, but turning around, he finds his light. That's what I love about Jem.

Romance: Tessa, Will, Jem. If you looked on Wikipedia, then you know what happens between these three. There was a lot of tension between Tessa and Will, and Tessa did get closer to Jem. But in the end, I was heartbroken and screaming and crying. But as much as I feel what happened shouldn't of had, Clare did make me see that doing what Tessa/Will wanted to do would have hurt Jem, then it wasn't worth making him feel more horrible.

Now, you all know Charlotte and Henry start over, in a way, and they are on good terms, and that the spy was stupid and thought love could get him/her through it all, but in the end, his/her lover didn't really love him/her, just using him/her for information. How crappy is that? I'm happy the lover died. Magnus, of course, comes back and helps Will with his problem, but as all of you who have read City of Fallen Angels, he finds out the bitch Camille cheats on him, and he leaves her. Now, it doesn't indicate that he actually starts a relationship with Woolsey Scott, but from CoFA, then yes, we do know he does. Magnus and Alec are much better. But there's a surprising relationship that actually forbidden by Laws that had me shouting for joy. I hope it works out in the end. (Hint: reread the fifth paragraph and guess.)

Ending: First, it was great. It started with a lot of happy endings, with Charlotte keeping the Institue and some other happy secrets coming out, but then BAM! Clare hits us with a bomb that we know won't go over well with Will and his family. Hopefully, the next book will pick up right where this one left off.

One thing I forgot to point out eariler though is how the title fits into all of this. On the cover, it's Jem. Yeah, he doesn't have anything to do with the title, he's just a pretty picture (better than Will's). But then, later on, Clare makes a reference to Mortmain's past (which is the cause of all of this mess) that makes the title make sense.

Oh, and we don't learn much about the Clockwork Angel except that when Tessa's in trouble, it somehow comes alive, and that Nate wants her to wear it at all times. That's it. Wish there was more.

And you know how Will's afraid of ducks? (Or, you will.) Well, as a geek, I wanted to know what the fear of ducks was, and it's orinthophobia (sounds more like the fear of the orthodontics.) That or this one: Anatidaephobia — fear that somewhere, somehow, a duck is watching you (fictional, from a Gary Larson cartoon published in The Far Side Gallery, 4). Taken from Yahoo UK & Ireland Answers. It's hilarious.

Future: DAMN IT! THE CLOCKWORK PRINCESS DOESN'T COME OUT UNTIL NEXT YEAR!!!

Rating, Cover, & Ending (which was a happy/shocking one)

I love Jem on the cover. At first I thought it was Will, but then I see that the man has lighter hair than what Wil would've had. And I know now that Will's on the Clockwork Angel, and that's not the most flattering picture of him.

Review:

Okay, no book frustrated me more than this one in my entire life (so far). I wanted to scream at half of the characters in this book, I laughed at the funny parts, and I wanted to cry my eyes out at the end. Come on, who does that two of the most loved characters! WHY! And then the big BOOM, BAM, Holy-crap-why-does-2014-have-to-be-so-far-way part at the end, I swear I was swearing up and down in my head (since everyone else was sleeping) and asking why Sebastian had to be such a jerk.

Okay, first off, the plot. Jace has been kidnapped by Sebastian and Sebastian is controlling him through the evil bond they have that Lilith put on them. What Sebastian wants, believes, and wants Jace to do, Jace does the same. Can't kill Sebastian without killing Jace. And that sucks, especially when all everyone wants to do is separate Jace from Sebastian. And it also doesn't help that they're traveling the world in some transporting apartment that no one can track but for a few seconds. Yeah, and that's just small detail. Sebastian's plan to take over the world is diabolical and genius at the same time.

So, the Council decided to lessen the search for Jace and Sebastian because some wardings over Wrangel Island broke. This makes Clary mad, and she decides to call upon the Seelie Queen for help (which was stupid and smart). In this book, the Queen is a bitch. No, really, she was. She gave answers only for a price, and then she turns around on the Shadowhunters and sides with Sebastian, all to save her and her peoples' skin. What a bitch. But, the thing she wanted was two rings. These rings let the owners talk to each other mentally. Clary, instead giving them to the Queen, decides to use them to connect to Simon while she goes with Jace and Sebastian and try to find out what they plan to do. It's stupid yet smart. Keep your friends close, keep your enemies closer. Well, I would do it, but Clary should have at least told her mother, who freaked out about it.

Turns out Jace is Jace and not in this book. Because of his connection to Sebastian, he acts just like him. And the big dark evil rune on his chest where Lilith put her mark is healed, and that's how Sebastian has a control over him. I mean, Jace was still his fun loving self, but in Clary's case, and mine, I saw how different he was from the first four books. It even says so in the book. Jace we know is more a guy that does what he wants, doesn't listen to people, and forms plans all on his own. The Jace in this book is submissive, doesn't come up with the plans, and has to ask if it's okay to do something before he does it. I made me sick and sad. Poor Clary.

Okay, the main thing I really want to say is about Sebastian. Yeah, evil Sebastian. Well, let me say first that at some points in the book he didn't seem so evil. Yeah, crazy right? "Did she hit her head?" No, I didn't. It was mostly when he was just with Clary. He actually seem to open to her about their family. And try to connect to her in his sick yet somewhat understandable way, like this water reflection thing, where he tried to get her to see that they were the 'same'. But putting that aside, he did seem kind towards her. He told her about their dad and his family, how he grew up, where their last name came from, what Valentine did to both him and Jace. Sebastian was whipped when he was younger. And I actually felt a little sympathy for him. Why whip on boy and not the other? I want to say it was because of the demon blood in Sebastian and Valentine expected him to be perfect. (Jerk.) Also, Sebastian asked Clary if she could ever forgive him (pg. 355) a few times. That he's changed. The 'plan' he told her was that he wanted to summon a lot of demons to one place, and use a second Mortal Cup he had created (and destoryed the maker) to destroy them all. And Clary somewhat believed that Jace's blood changed him a bit---NOT! But Sebastian did have a point, he and Clary are alike in some ways. She did kill Valentine without a regret. She hated him, just like Sebastian does. But beneath that kind exterior towards her, was a lonely boy with an obsession with his sister. Huh? you say. Let me elaborate. Towards the end of the book, Sebastian revealed that he not only wanted his sister at his side when they take over the world, but at his side means sister and lover. He loved her. She was the only family of his that was left (since he doesn't include Jocelyn). He went so far to try to rape her. He said that just because they had the same parents doesn't make the related. They were experiments. Human laws doesn't apply to them. So, he went for her. And in his mind, and I believe this too, he actually did love her. The demon blood made him somewhat incapable of loving anyone, even his father, but somehow, because Clary was the only one that didn't leave him or abuse him, he used her to fill in the hole. I felt sorry and angry at him at the same time. But his jealousy toward Jace and Clary was genuine. Sucks for him.

Wow, that was a long paragraph. Moving on!

Romance. Always a key in Cass's novels. Jace and Clary. Jace isn't Jace. Clary is upset, but Jace still loves Clary and there are a few steamy scenes in the book between them. In this book, Jace was a bit more focused on sleeping with her than in any other book. If you read "The Dirty Club Scene" unedited, then you would know what I mean. Link is right here. I was kinda disappointed, but yet not, since at one point, Jace was Jace again, but Clary had to disrespect his wishes and not let him go. She's an idiot. But they had a happy ending.

Ever since Isabelle learned of her father's betrayal on her mother, she's been wary of boys. This isn't helpful when she discovers she really, really likes Simon, who she believes doesn't like her back. As a girl that kinda flings guys around, Simon really doesn't think she likes him. He's expressed it, but to him, she hasn't. Isabelle changes that by really showing she does care for him even when he doesn't realize it. There happy ending...next book.

Now Magnus and Alec. Camille is back, and she offers a key to Alec being with Magnus forever, or until he dies. She says he can take Magnus's immortality, his magic, away, for a price of course. Alec, being smart for once in this book, says no, but over the course of his meetings with her, never tells Magnus. And he also peeved off that Magnus never tells him about his past. I have yet to read The Infernal Devices, but what I've read from Extras and some scenes in this book, I wouldn't want to either. And because Alec didn't trust Magnus to tell him what was going on, Magnus did the unthinkable. HE DUMPED HIM!!!!!! This was me when I read it.

Seriously, I was crying! I love Malec. It was so sad. And you know what, even though it wasn't in the book, Magnus knew he was starting to lose Alec. Link's right here to know how I do. Made me cry harder. And I don't cry that easily. DAMN IT, WHY MAGNUS!! I hope they get a happy ending in C.o.H.F.

Ending. Well, Camille got killed by Maureen, who, for a new vampire, is shocking. So in her mind, she's the most powerful vampire in Manhattan. Sebastian's coming for them all and planning on killing everyone except for Clary (i'm guessing), who he will torture and probably rape and find some twisted way to bind her to him (marriage maybe). Jace has Heavenly fire in his body; his bones are connected by it and he can kinda shock people, so he and Clary have to be extra safe: no sex, just kissing. Oh, and somehow, Sebastian summoned an angel and ripped off its wings and killed it.

What a ending.

Future: City of Heavenly Fire, sometime in 2014. WHICH SUCKS!!!!!

"'Oh, please,' said Simon. 'All I did was tell you the entire plot of Star Wars.'

"'Only if it was a really gay spider,' said Magnus, and he yelled as Alec punched him in the arm. 'Ow, okay, never mind.'" pg 389-90.

Wow, lot of quotes. But worth it. :D

Once again, Cassandra Clare delivers a heart stopping, hair ripping, screaming at the top of your lungs novel. I loved it, and I can't wait for the next one, even though I have to wait two years.

Review: City of Fallen Angels

Review:

Okay, this has to be the best on out of them all so far. (Well, for now.) There was more action, drama, romance, and twists that send our characters on new adventures than most of the other books. So, let's start with the beginning.

First, VALENTINE IS DEAD!!!! WOOHOO!! Finally. I was so excited. But the trouble doesn't end there. Immediately in the beginning, Simon is introduced to a very old vampire, Camille, the former head vampire of Manhattan. And she wants to her spot back. She tells Simon if he's on her side, then the vampires of the Manhattan coven will have to come over to her side, and kill off Raphael. Is that her true plan? NO! In fact, her plan is part of a much larger one than that. To that later.....

New character: Kyle. Status: hot singer part of Simon's new band. Reality: werewolf named Jordan that's been assigned to protect Simon and help him get started on the right foot as a vampire. I liked Jordan. He's part of the Praetor Lupus, or Wolf Guardians, guardians that help new-born vampires/werewolves/blah blah blah get situtated and restart their life. Well, Jordan also happens to be the werewolf that turned Maia into one. And they meet, so there's drama there.  At some points, I thought Jordan's role as a Praetor wasn't needed, but it was also a way for him to try to make up for what he did. And his story, it's so sad! I would have forgiven him after I heard it.

Next dilemma is Jace and Clary. After three books, they're finally together. But that's not the problem. Problem is that Jace starts having these strange dreams of him and Clary, and at the end, he kills her. And then, to avoid them, he stays awake constantly, and because he thinks he's becoming a monster, a.k.a. Valentine, he avoids Clary and tries to protect Simon from whoever wants to kill him to try to make it up to Clary (even though she doesn't know it). This pisses Clary off because of what the Queen said to her one time in the park when she and Jace were training (oh yeah, Clary dropped out of high school to become a Shadowhunter. Forgot to mention that.). She said that Clary and Jace are bonded by their angel blood, and that might be the only reason why he's with her (Queen's a bitch.) Anyway, Clary's worried about Jace breaking up with her. And at one point I actually thought they were going to break up (after a very steamy allyway scene). Jace acting like all of this leads to the bigger plan......

Shadowhunters are being killed too. Why? By who? Well, we find out that Camille is doing it. One, for revenge, and two, because she was told to. Now Camille, as said before, is a very old vampire. As old as Magnus. How can someone command her? Well, that were things get strange. Turns out Adam had a first wife, Lilith, who didn't obey God and Adam and was turned from the Garden of Eden and casted as a demon. And as a demon, she became the demon Valentine summoned to get blood from for Sebastian/Jonanthan. And when Sebastian and Valentine summoned all those demons from City of Glass, she came through, and as an ancient demon, she has a lot of power. And this power includes: Tormenting Jace, possessing Jace, perserving Sebastian's dead body to bring him back because she thinks he's her son, ruling over a demon-worshipping cult, injecting pregnant mothers with demon and shadowhunter blood, and destroying lives. Put that all together and you get a kickass plot that blows your socks off. Wish I was a Shadowhunter. I'd love to kill her.

I've already said things about Jace and Clary's relationship (which was fixed). They did have some hot scenes in the book, don't dispair. But it was Simon and his relationship that got heated up. So, Luke and Jocelyn are getting married. YAY! Well, both Maia and Isabelle are invited, and Simon is too. Now, as girls, they both expect Simon to take them to the wedding. 1: They never said they were dating exclusively (which is stupid). 2: they are good friends. 3: they both really like Simon. 4: Simon likes them too and doesn't want to hurt their feelings. Well, when it all gets discovered, it's not pretty. Both girls hate him, but Maia hates Jordan a bit more now that he's back in her life. Now, as a girl, I'd be on the girl's side, but in this case, I'm not. 1: they never did say they had to date exclusively. 2: Isabelle said she was out of his league, and that she expected him not to date anyone else, and that just pissed me off. 3: Maia and Simon, their relationship was like his and Clary's. Video games, comics, Manga. Done. I don't blame Maia as much as I blame Isabelle, but Simon still should have said something.

Now, Magnus and Alec. I haven't forgotten! In this one, we find out that Magnus has dated a lot. And when I mean a lot, I mean a lot. Like maybe over 200. Well, this makes Alec mad, especially when he finds out he's dated both boys and girls. Well, to Magnus, spending eternity alone isn't so fun, even if he has an adorable but mean cat. To Alec, it's just a reminder that someday he's going to be old and dead and Magnus is going to look the same. Camille gets a hold of this information and.......well, that's in the next book. Oh, and some old feelings of Magnus about his past come out, and most of them reflex back to The Infernal Devices series. OMG!

Well, there's not much to tell about the characters. They're all the same. Some start to show a soft side (isabelle) and a defiant side (Clary) and a jealous side (Alec), but other than that, the characters are the characters, just with more drama and fighting in their lives.

The ending made me scream:

Seriously, I was about to tear my hair out. Sebastian is one of the most evil people on Earth. Wish Jace would have chopped off his head alond with stabbing him in the back.

"The fact that Kyle had just called Clary cute did no seem to have endeared him to Jace, whose face had tightened alarmingly. 'That depends,' he said. 'Do you wish to be punched in the face?'" pg. 140

Cassandra Clare is a must read author. More action and drama and romance sweep off the pages of the City of Fallen Angels. I can't wait to read what's in the City of Lost Souls.

Review: Third book in the seris/trilogy (since that's what it was originally) I was expecitng a lot. This was the book where the third Mortal Instrument was to be found. Where we find out if Clary and Jace can be together. Is valentine going to die?! To teh point, the book kinda met my expectations.

First, the plot. First, it was finding Ragnor Fell to wake up Jocelyn and fight Valentine. Then there were a billion subplots. Getting to the city, finding Fell, finding the Book of White, getting Simon out of jail, is Jace going to be like Valentine, etc. It was somewhat overwhelming, but I got through it. Eventually all of it came to a point that it made sense. Clary and her mom's reunion wasn't pretty. Sure, Jocelyn was shocked to see her daughter in hunting gear, but then Clary ripped into her about lying to her and taking her memory and not telling her about her brother, Jace. I was kinda shocked at that, but then again I was expecitng it. The scene is my favorite out of the book. Well, not my favorite favorite, just one of them.

The Sebastian thing was evil and genius. If I wanted to get in to Idris, I'd do what he did too. And who he acutlaly is---OMG! And it kinda sucks with his personality, being jealous in all of what Jace tells him about his father. He's mean that's for sure.

Clary is very implusive in this book.

1: she created a portal to Idris.

2: she left Amartis's house without thinking of the consequences.

3: she brings jace back from the dead (oops)

4: and many more things I can't remember.

As much as all her impluses made the book intersting, creating new twists and turns and story lines, I thought she was stupid.

The romance was okay. A few steamy scenes between Jace and Clary, but that was it. It was okay, since they thought of each other as brother and sister throughtout most of the book, but still, there could have been more tension and a bit of sneaky glances or something! The ending scene was fine though.

Simon, Isabelle, and Maia. What a love triangle! Vampire, Shadowhunter, and a Werewolf. And instead of two guys it's two girls! There was a lot of flirting with Maia and a semi-steamy with Izzy. Ooh, not sure who I want to win. I'm kinda going for Izzy. :)

Magnus and Alex. I knew they were going to get together by a post Cass posted on her tumblr, but I didnt' know Magnus's favors without charge were his way of showing Alex he cared. I just thorught he liked them all. Alex just kept everything kinda bottled up until the end. And then I read a deleted scene of their first kiss, OMG!

The end was amzing. Big battle scene. Karma came and bit Valentine in teh butt, and he got smoked by the Angel Raziel. Haha! Then the big party with all the happy ending, *sigh. :D It was good.

Review: So, after forever, I'm finally finishing this series (or reading the rest of it). I read the first one a long tima ago and loved it. This book didn't have the same wow factor, but it was good.

So the overall plot is that the Mortal Sword is stolen by Valentine, Jace is accused of helping him because he is Valentine's son, and Downworlders are dying. They are dying because with the blood of a werewolf, faerie, warlock, and a vampire, the sword can be turned evil. I don't like it that Valentine had to kill to get it. And two of them were teh main characters! (No, they don't die, but they nearly do.) I wanted to kill Valentine. Speaking of of killing.......

In C.o.A., Jace shows a different side of himself. Reckless, careless, and scared. He hates the fact he's Valentine's son, and he fears he could become just like him, and when people start to abandoning him, he feels down right lonely. Doesn't help that he's kicked out of his home. And when the Inquistor came to get him, he was thrown into jail just because he's V. son. Very unfair. I really felt sorry for him. On the positive side though, he has some enhanced abilities and uses his anger toward his father to kill the demons that Valentine has summon.

I hated what happened to Simon. I thought that was kinda unnecessary, but it made his story a bit more interesting since he isn't human anymore. Why he did it, can I see why. After watching Clary (his girlfriend in the book at the time) kiss Jace for the Seelie Queen, I do what he did to. But it's cool what happens to him in the end.

The big fight on teh boat was long, but expected. Thousands of demons vs. only a hand full of Shadowhunters. Eek! The details were to a T, nothing left out, but sometimes I felt a little overwhelmed. At first I got confused when Clary created a new rune to destroy the ship, but then I got what happened from Jace's point a view. (By the way, switching characters for narrators is awesome.)

All the characters were still stubborn, funny, and determined. Clary and Jace mostly because they want to stop Valentine and kill him. Plus, they hate being reminded that that's their dad.

Ending was a good cliffhanger. I jumped straight into the next book to find out what happens. I wasn't pleased when I did.
