Review: Sweet Evil by Wendy Higgins

WILL CONTAIN SPOILERS

Embrace the Forbidden

What if there were teens whose lives literally depended on being bad influences?

This is the reality for sons and daughters of fallen angels.

Tenderhearted Southern girl Anna Whitt was born with the sixth sense to see and feel emotions of other people. She’s aware of a struggle within herself, an inexplicable pull toward danger, but Anna, the ultimate good girl, has always had the advantage of her angel side to balance the darkness within. It isn’t until she turns sixteen and meets the alluring Kaidan Rowe that she discovers her terrifying heritage and her willpower is put to the test. He’s the boy your daddy warned you about. If only someone had warned Anna.

Forced to face her destiny, will Anna embrace her halo or her horns?

Review:

Sweet Evil. The name itself is a contradiction, and you know contradictions: they're tasty like the rainbow. Get it? Starburst? Anyway, Sweet Evil was very sweet, yet evil. It made a mixture of emotions run through you as you read each line. If you like angel books, read this one. Sweet and Evil all at once, Sweet Evil will make you wish for more of Anna and Kaiden and the whole lot at the end.

Plot: The book starts off fast. Higgins dives automatically into Anna finding out who she is and blasting off to find the nun that knows everything and to see her father that's in prision. This was the only downside to this book. The fast moving plot in the beginning. Wish there was a bit more to Anna finding out who she is and her time with Kaiden, but what's done is done. The rest of the plot is fine. Well written, full of suspense and drama. And a stupid cliffhanger at the end.

In this book, the angels are created differently. The Nephilium can be by products of demons or angels or each other (like Anna). And for each of the seven sins, there is a Duke in charge of them, along with their children, the Nephilium, to act as their servants. It's a different twist on what you might expect from Light/Dark angels and their offspring. And there's nothing wrong with that; the Dukes like hot bodies, which produces hot offspring.

Characters:
Anna is one of those characters that you love is the heroine, but hate because she's a goodie-two-shoes and is so native that you want to chunk the book at the wall. I have a love/hate relationship with her. Personally, the innocent good girl is a stupid character to have as the main character. I think the MC should have a back bone, but with Anna and this book, her nature was perfect. She didn't know what was going on with her. One thing that was always pointed out about her was her virginity and how she still had it. Then, as she learned and starting training, she grew that back bone.

Kaiden is a hot jerk. He's the bad boy with the hidden soft side, especially when it comes to Anna. He knows what he has to do to live, but he wishes he had the freedom not too. Sensitive rebel you could call him.

Blake and Ginger: Didn't like them as much. Ginger was the mean twin, and Blake was the horny best friend.

Kopano and Marna: Both are nice. Loved them, though I think Kopano likes to move fast through relationships.

Patti and John Gray: Patti is too overprotecting, but has that nice Southern charm. John, Anna's dad, is someone who I wouldnt' want to be on his bad side. But Higgins created him perfectly, a scary biker man that loves his little girl.

The Dukes: most are idiots, scary, or nice.

Romance: It felt like insta-love between Kaiden and Anna. After two days on the road, I felt like they moved pretty fast and were in love with a click of a button. I'm not a fan of insta-love, but maybe it's Anna's innocence that I'm letting her get by with it. She's new to the whole love thing, so maybe it's that first love crap that Higgins was going for. Kopano and Anna, well....Kopano likes to move fast too, but faster than Kaiden. His relationship with Anna, I think, was just to show us that Kaiden does care for Anna, since he didnt' like Kopano much through the book, but I think that relationship was a bit unnecessary. Being close friends probably would have done better.

Ending: I didn't like the cliffhanger and what happened to the others, but I'm glad it left it open for the sequel.

Future: Higgins announced the name of the next book: Sweet Hope, but for some stupid reason, it hasn't been picked up by a publisher yet. HELLO! Do you not see how many people want Sweet Hope and how many liked Sweet Evil?

Quotes: (p.s. This book was hilarious!)

"'He's not my type. If I had a type it would be...nice. Not some hotheaded, egocentric male slut.' (Anna)
"'Did you just call him a male slut?' Jay laughed. 'Dang, that's, like, the worst language I've ever heard you use.'" pg. 31

"'We'd better not get in an accident because you're busy sexting and driving,' I said. He burst out laughing." pg. 12

"You came across the country with the son of the Duke of Lust?! Son of a--" John. pg. 223

"And tell the Rowe boy to keep his paws off my little girl, 'cause I'll be out soon to take care of him if he doesn't." John, pg 230

He stared at me with those crazed eyes for a few long heartbeats before smacking his hands together in a loud clap and shouting, "Yeah!" John. pg. 306. (I have a friend that does this. It's hilarious.)

Rating & Ending:

Cover:
I love how hot Kaiden is; the dress is absolutely amazing; and the innocence that Anna projects.

*Won this book. no review necessary
